The superyacht industry will witness a significant moment at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show as Breakthrough, the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht. This 118.8-meter vessel represents more than impressive engineering - it signals a new era of sustainable yachting on the water.
Built by renowned Dutch shipyard Feadship and launched in 2024, Breakthrough stands as the yard’s largest creation to date. The vessel exemplifies Feadship’s ambitious commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030, marking a pivotal step toward environmentally conscious yachting.
What sets Breakthrough apart isn’t just her size, but her revolutionary propulsion system. As the maritime industry’s first pure hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht, she recently achieved another historic first by becoming the inaugural vessel to receive liquid hydrogen bunkering in Dutch waters.
The yacht’s innovative energy system combines hydrogen fuel cells with traditional backup power. While her hydrogen capacity limits transoceanic crossings, the fuel cell technology delivers remarkable efficiency, providing a full week of silent, emission-free operation whether anchored or cruising at 10 knots. For extended voyages, MTU generators running on HVO (Hydro-treated vegetable oil) ensure continuous power to her 3,200 kW ABB pod drives.
Designed by RWD with Edmiston providing owner representation, Breakthrough accommodates up to 30 guests across 15 elegantly appointed staterooms, supported by a crew of 43. The vessel’s impressive 19-meter beam creates unusually spacious interiors and generous side decks where guests can stroll comfortably together.
The owner’s suite occupies a dedicated deck above the bridge, featuring dual staterooms, twin dressing areas, bathrooms, a private gym, pantry, and two fireplace-equipped offices surrounding a grand saloon. A distinctive private corridor connects the upper level to lower decks via an elegant staircase adorned with built-in bookshelves and display areas, plus a dedicated owner’s elevator.
Interior styling embraces a sophisticated coastal aesthetic, blending light neutral tones across textured fabrics and leathers, complemented by marble accents, rattan details, and rich wood finishes including fumed and taupe eucalyptus, and limed oak.
Breakthrough pushes boundaries in connecting guests with the marine environment through an unprecedented number of hull openings. The vessel features 14 retractable balconies that remain invisible when closed but extend at the touch of a button, complete with railings and floors that align perfectly with interior spaces.
Additional openings include five oversized shell doors and seven large platforms, all designed to blur the lines between interior comfort and ocean access. The expansive aft beach club flows down to a generous swim platform via sweeping staircases, while a striking glass infinity pool on the main deck provides a stunning focal point for outdoor entertaining.
As Breakthrough prepares for her Monaco debut, she represents more than quality craftsmanship, she embodies the future of responsible superyacht design. Her presence at the show signals to industry leaders and discerning owners that sustainable technology and uncompromising performance can coexist seamlessly.
